Revenge Destroys You
Cycle of RevengeHe Who Fights MonstersRevenge Is a Poison
What it is
Pursuing vengeance — even when justified — is ultimately self-destructive, hollow, or morally degrading. The avenger is consumed by their quest.
How to spot it
The plot contains ALL of: (1) a character pursuing vengeance, (2) the pursuit costs them relationships, identity, or humanity, (3) the story frames revenge as destructive rather than satisfying, OR the character ultimately chooses mercy.
- The avenger becomes more brutal or morally compromised as the quest continues
- Achieving revenge feels hollow or brings no peace
- Loved ones are lost or alienated due to the obsession
- A climactic choice between vengeance and mercy occurs
- The story frames letting go as the harder but nobler path
Classic examples
Black Panther (T'Challa rejecting vengeance), The Last of Us Part II, Oldboy, Sweeney Todd, Star Wars (Luke refusing to kill Vader)
Contrast with
